The botanical name for Stock is Matthiola incana, named after Dr Matthiole (1527 – 1576), a personal physician to Emperor Maxmillian of Austria, who wrote several medical and botanical books.  The plant is native to the Mediterranean and Canary Islands and has been a favorite since Elizabethan times.  Stock flowers are particularly noted for their sweet fragrance and good vase life.  Sock symbolizes lasting beauty and bonds of affection.  Colors range from purple to raspberry to pink, cream and white.
